Thanksgiving '07 Review

We've about fully recovered from Thanksgiving, though the oil stains remain in the street.

We lowered not one, not two, but three birds into vats of 350 degree oil. Two 20+ pound turkeys and one goose weighing substantially less. The turkeys definitely weighed more than little Jack who was dressed in his own turkey garb for the day.

One of the highlights for Jack was getting to see his second Grandpap for the first time.

Granny was back to visit too and made her famous bread and stuffing.

Eventually, after a few beers, several shots of 15 year old scotch, the best bourbon in the world and some pear liquor we settled down for a nicely fried turkey.

Even the beagles got spoiled more than normal so they had a nice Thanksgiving too.

Double Dribble

One of the best things about the Nintendo Wii is the its ability to download classic Nintendo games through the virtual console system. One of the games that hit this week is a true NES classic. Double Dribble. Konami's super fun 8-bit basketball game that was one of mine and Robert's favorites as kids. Check it out in the youtube below. Do you remember how cool those slam dunks were...how cool they STILL are?!?!

American Dream Withers, Dies

You may recall posts on this blog from last March about a new 70's dance club called "Flashback" opening in Lincoln's Hay Market. Everyone except the guy sinking his life's savings into the lousy idea knew that it was doomed to fail. The only question was how quickly it would die. We all made our predictions.

About a week ago the place was still open. This morning however, I noticed a for rent sign on the place. So sometime within the last week, it ended. So who prediction was closest?

Here are the predictions:

Bill's guess for out of business date: September 15, 2007

Black Friday, Blue Saturday, and a cat

I went to Circuit City to take advantage of a Black Friday special. I snapped this pic of people having to sit down because the lines to the register were so long and slow.

Tomorrow is Blue Saturday! Jayhawk blue that is! Here Lou Holtz gives the Hawks a pep talk. Rock Chalk pep talk!

Meow Meow! Erin's Mom took this killer pic of Riley the cat with her cell phone! Meow Meow!

Jayhawk Birthday Bash

Erin and I headed to Lawrence, Kansas yesterday meeting up with Mullins to take in a Jayhawk football game. We watched as the Hawks rolled over Iowa State to become 11 - 0 on the season.

I have seen the "Our coach can eat your coach" Mangino shirts, but this one was new for me.

Erin also made these fantastic cupcakes as my birthday cake. They're coconut flavored cupcakes with strawberry and coconut icing. They are also filled like a twinkie with more strawberry icing. Tasty!

Jayhawks now #2 in the land!!!

You know you are from California if...

the blog has been a bit slow lately...here's some decent filler :)

1. Your coworker has 8 body piercings and none are visible.
2. You make over $300,000 and still can't afford a house.
3. You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in English.
4. Your child's 3rd-grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Flower.
5. You can't remember . . is pot illegal?
6. You've been to a baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm donor.
7. You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown, and you can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian (or Tanzanian Peaberry).
8. A really great parking space can totally move you to tears.
9. Gas costs $1.00 per gallon more than anywhere else in the U.S.
10. Unlike back home, the guy at 8:30 am at Starbucks wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses who looks like George Clooney really IS George Clooney.
12. Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment.
13. It's barely sprinkling rain and there's a report on every news station: "STORM WATCH."
14. You pass an elementary school playground and the children are all busy with their cells or pagers.
15. The Terminator is your governor.
16. If you drive illegally, they take your driver's license. If you're here illegally, they want to give you one.

Jack's Good Day

Jack is well past 11 pounds now and doing well. He had a trip into Folsom today and also started playing with his first toy - kind of a teething rattle. We placed it in his hand and on several occasions he kept holding it and gummed at it a bit. I guess you've got to start somewhere.

Angels & Airwaves Sohpomore Effort is Solid

Angels & Airwaves release their 2nd album, I-Empire, last week. A fan of their first album as you might recall from previous posts, I think I-Empire is equally good and would recommend it.

The first single, Everything's Magic, is solid and there are numerous other standout tracks including Breathe(the slower love song) and Call to Arms. The album is a bit more Blink 182ish in my opinion and less experimental than the first.

I bought the Best Buy version with two "bonus" acoustic songs. These are horrible recordings and not worth trying to find.

Kansas Jayhawks are #4 in the BCS

It is a golden year for the Jayhawks! My pal Mullins celebrates the news from Paris, France! We i-chatted with him while he was on location at the Eiffel Tower.

Bowl Projections Underway

Here's one of the first set of projections.

Nebraska - Bowl Free and get an early start towards planting next year's crop

Kansas - Cotton Bowl vs. Alabama
Georgia Tech - Meneike Car Car Bowl vs. Rutgers
Arkansas - Independence Bowl vs. Oklahoma State
Michigan - Capital One Bowl vs. Auburn

My guess is GT won't be heading to any bowl. They'll likely be 6-6 after squeeking out a game against Duke and losing to UNC and UGA. The can help the Huskers shuck corn. The Hogs, who load their schedule with patsies than anyone in the country (4), are still somewhat more deserving.
